NFPA2112 Standard for YSMLITE Fire Retardant Tape

NFPA, the full name is National Fire Protection Association, NFPA2112 is an important standard developed by the American Fire Protection Association.

1. Standard Overview

Scope of Application

Mainly applicable to protective clothing for personnel in working environments where flash fire hazards may exist. For example, in industries such as petrochemicals, refineries, and natural gas processing facilities, workers may be exposed to the risk of flash fires caused by leaks of flammable liquids or gases. The protective clothing specified in the NFPA 2112 standard can provide these workers with the necessary protection.

Protection Goal

Aims to protect the wearer from the heat hazards caused by flash fires. Flash fires are short-lived, high-intensity fire events that, although short-lived (usually no more than 10 seconds), can generate extremely high heat. The NFPA 2112 standard ensures that protective clothing can reduce the heat transferred to the human body when a flash fire occurs, thereby reducing the risk of burns.

2. Clothing Performance Requirements

Flame Retardant Performance

The outer material of protective clothing must have good flame retardancy. According to the standard requirements, after a specific flame test, the material should be able to quickly self-extinguish and will not continue to burn or smolder. For example, when using a vertical flame test, the material should stop burning within a specified time (such as no more than 2 seconds) after the flame contacts, and the length of the char is also strictly limited.

Thermal protection performance

Evaluated by heat transfer test. The standard stipulates that protective clothing must be able to control the heat transferred to the inner surface of the clothing at a certain level under a certain heat flux (such as 84kW/m²) to ensure that the wearer does not suffer second-degree or third-degree burns. This requires that the material combination of the clothing (including outer layer, insulation layer, etc.) can effectively block the transfer of heat.

Dimensional stability

After multiple washings and heat exposure, protective clothing should maintain its dimensional stability. This is to ensure that the protective performance of the clothing will not be affected by shrinkage or deformation during use. For example, after 5 standard washing procedures, the size change of the clothing should not exceed the specified percentage (such as ±3%).

3. Labeling and certification

Labeling requirements

Protective clothing that meets the NFPA 2112 standard must be clearly labeled. The labeling content should include information such as the manufacturer's name, clothing model, standard version number that meets the requirements, and protection level. These logos help users identify the performance and application scope of the clothing.

Certification process

Protective clothing usually needs to be tested and certified by independent third-party certification agencies. These certification agencies strictly test the various performance of clothing in accordance with the requirements of the NFPA 2112 standard. Only products that pass the test are allowed to be marked on the market as complying with the NFPA 2112 standard, which helps ensure that the quality of protective clothing on the market is reliable and can provide effective protection for users.
