In modern clothing manufacturing, especially functional workwear, protective clothing and high-visibility clothing, reflective tape has become an indispensable safety element. Whether it is engineering clothing on construction sites or sports jackets worn by night cyclists, reflective tape plays an important role in improving visibility and protecting life safety. However, many consumers and buyers overlook a key point: reflective materials need to withstand the rigorous challenges of repeated washing, drying and even dry cleaning during long-term use. Otherwise, even the best reflective performance will rapidly decline with the use cycle, resulting in a series of problems such as shortened service life, unqualified clothing, user complaints and even safety hazards.

Internationally, different washing standards have been formulated to uniformly evaluate the changes in the physical and optical properties of textiles during the washing process. Among them, ISO 6330 (home and commercial washing), ISO 3175 (dry cleaning) and ISO 15797 (industrial washing) are the three most common standards for the application of reflective tape on clothing. These standards are not only used to test the stability of material performance, but also provide factories with a basis for key parameters in the design and manufacturing process.

As an industry leading reflective fabric for clothing manufacturer, all reflective tapes produced by YSM can maintain their reflective performance and durability under various washing conditions and meet the washing standards set by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). YSM's high quality reflective tapes for clothing meet ISO6330, ISO3175 and ISO1597 washing standards.

ISO6330: Textiles - Domestic washing and drying procedures for textile testing

ISO6330 is a standard developed by ISO specifically for textile washing and drying. Its full name is "Textiles - Domestic washing and drying procedures for textile testing". The standard specifies in detail the washing procedures that simulate daily household washing conditions, including washing temperature, detergent dosage, operating parameters of washing machinery, etc., aiming to evaluate the performance changes of textiles after multiple washings, such as color fastness, dimensional stability and durability.

For clothing reflective tapes, meeting the ISO6330 standard means that they can maintain good reflective performance and physical properties after multiple home washings. This requires the reflective tape to have excellent water resistance, be able to maintain a stable reflective effect under different temperature and detergent conditions, and ensure that the bonding strength between the tape and the clothing substrate is not affected.

Washing conditions mainly cover the following aspects:

  • Washing temperature: 30°C, 40°C, 60°C or even 95°C, which can be flexibly selected according to the end use.
  • Washing machine type: Use a calibrated drum washing machine (Type A) for simulation.
  • Detergent formulation: Usually a standard detergent without phosphorus is used.
  • Drying method: Natural drying, drum drying or flat drying can be used.

Challenges to the performance of reflective tape

Reflective tapes mostly use micro glass beads or micro prism structures, which achieve high brightness visual effects through the principle of light reflection. However, micro glass beads are prone to fall off during washing due to water immersion, high temperature and mechanical stirring, causing the reflectivity to drop rapidly. In addition, the adhesive structure between the reflective layer and the base fabric may also peel off, bubble, crack and other problems after repeated washing, especially when tumble drying.

Practical advice

For traffic uniforms, school uniforms and night sportswear that need to be used for a long time, it is recommended to use reflective tape products that have passed ISO 6330 testing and come with authoritative third-party test reports. Clarifying the number of washing times and temperature requirements during the procurement process will effectively control the risk factors in the life cycle of clothing.

YSM heat transfer reflective tape meets the requirements of 25-50 times of water washing at 60°C (ISO6330), 10-325 times of dry cleaning (ISO3175), and 25 times of industrial washing (ISO15797).

ISO3175: Performance test procedures for dry cleaning and wet cleaning of textiles

The ISO3175 standard focuses more on the dry cleaning and wet cleaning performance tests of textiles, including dimensional changes after dry cleaning, washability evaluation, and test procedures for cleaning and finishing using different solvents.

The ISO3175 standard simulates the performance changes of textiles under different washing conditions through a series of detailed test procedures, such as tetrachloroethylene dry cleaning method, hydrocarbon solvent cleaning method, etc. For reflective tape, although its main application scenario is not dry cleaning, understanding its stability under extreme conditions helps to evaluate the performance of the tape when accidentally exposed to specific solvents or professional cleaning. In addition, the ISO3175 standard also provides a valuable reference for the design and production of reflective tapes, helping manufacturers optimize product performance to meet a wider range of market needs.

Typical dry cleaning solvents used in the standard include:

  • Perchloroethylene.
  • Petroleum solvents (such as C9-C11 hydrocarbon solvents).
  • Dry cleaning auxiliaries (such as antistatic agents, defoaming agents).

Risks of dry cleaning process to reflective tape

Compared with water washing, the dry cleaning process has a higher temperature (up to 150°C), and the organic solvents used are easy to corrode the reflective layer and the adhesive layer structure. Common forms of damage include:

  • The adhesive softens and fails, resulting in the separation of the reflective film layer.
  • Solvent penetration causes the reflective layer to blur and fog.
  • The drying process causes the material to warp, delaminate, and yellow.

YSM reflective fabric tape meets the requirements of 25-75 washes at 60°C and 25 washes at 90°C (ISO6330), 10-30 dry cleanings (ISO3175), and 50 industrial washes (ISO15797).

ISO15797: Textiles - Test methods for industrial washing procedures for workwear

The full name of the ISO15797 standard is "Textiles - Industrial washing procedures for testing workwear", which aims to establish a unified framework to evaluate the performance of fabrics and garments after industrial washing and drying. The standard specifies a variety of washing and drying conditions (called procedures), ranging from mild to strict, to simulate industrial washing environments of different intensities.

For flame retardant reflective tape, meeting the ISO15797 standard means that it must be able to maintain stable reflective performance and physical properties under the harsh conditions of industrial washing. This requires that the reflective tape is not only resistant to water washing, but also able to withstand the impact of extreme environments such as high temperature and high humidity on the performance of the tape. Through the test of ISO15797 standard, clothing reflective tape can prove its application value in the industrial field and provide reliable safety protection for workers.

YSM flame retardant reflective tape meets the requirements of 25-50 times of water washing at 60℃ and 25 times of 90℃ (ISO6330), 10-30 times of dry cleaning (ISO3175), and 25-30 times of industrial washing (ISO15797).

hi vis tape for clothing manufacturer

YSM hi vis tape for clothing manufacturers have demonstrated their excellent performance and reliability in meeting ISO6330, ISO3175 and ISO15797 water washing standards. These international standards not only provide scientific basis and technical guidance for the design and production of reflective tapes, but also provide consumers with high-quality and high-safety product options.

Washing standards are not boring technical provisions, but key control points that determine the quality and service life of clothing. Correctly understanding and applying ISO 6330, ISO 3175 and ISO 15797 can not only avoid problems such as tape shedding and reflective failure, but also protect the safety of users while ensuring the professional image of the brand.
