Flame Retardant Reflective Tape NFPA Standard

NFPA 2112 is a standard developed by the National Fire Protection Association. It is called "Standard on Flame-Resistant Clothing for Protection of Industrial Personnel Against Short-Duration Thermal Exposures from Fire". This standard specifies the minimum design, performance, certification and testing requirements for flame-resistant clothing worn by industrial personnel working in areas where flash fire hazards may occur.

Main Goals of NFPA 2112

• Protect industrial personnel from short-term thermal exposure: such as steam cloud fires, jet fires, liquid fires (pool fires or flowing liquid fires), solid fires (solid material or dust fires), or warehouse fires.
• Reduce the severity of burns: Reduce the possibility of burns by ensuring that flame-resistant clothing can protect the wearer from fire and thermal events.
• Testing and Certification: Third-party testing is required to evaluate the overall flame resistance of the final garment to ensure that the garment itself does not increase the risk of injury.

Testing for NFPA 2112

• Vertical Burn Test: Expose the material to a standard flame for 12 seconds, then remove the flame to evaluate whether it will ignite and burn to a certain length.
• Thermal stability test: basically the same as the 500°F oven test in the NFPA 1975 standard.
• Thermal radiation and convection combined protection performance test (TPP method for short): a piece of fabric is placed under a specific thermal convection and radiation heat source, and the time required to reach a second-degree burn is recorded. The higher the TPP value, the stronger the protection provided by the fabric.
• Thermal mannequin test: a mannequin with multiple temperature testers on the whole body is used to wear a fireproof suit and exposed to a specific heat source to simulate the degree of burns that human skin may suffer.
