In the processing of daily clothing such as school uniforms, work clothes, cycling clothes, and outdoor clothing, the use of reflective tape is becoming more and more common. Whether it is to enhance nighttime visibility, safety, or enhance the beauty of clothing, reflective materials play an increasingly important role. However, many garment factories and individual DIY enthusiasts encounter a common problem when using reflective tape for clothing: after ironing, the tape fogs, bubbles, falls off, and the reflective effect deteriorates. This is often caused by improper operation, especially mistakes in the ironing stage. So, can reflective tape be ironed? How to iron it correctly?
What is reflective tape?
Iron on reflective tape is a functional material with high reflective performance, which is widely used in clothing, luggage, shoes and hats, safety equipment and other fields. Its core structure mainly includes three layers:
- Surface reflective layer: composed of high-refractive glass beads, micro-prismatic structure or crystal coating, is the key to achieving reflective effect.
- Base material layer: Common ones include PET (polyester film), TC cloth, PVC, TPU, etc. Different base materials determine the flexibility, heat resistance and ironability of the tape.
- Adhesive layer: hot melt adhesive layer or pressure sensitive adhesive layer, which determines its lamination method (hot lamination or cold lamination).
According to different processing requirements and usage methods, common classifications of reflective tapes are:
- Hot lamination reflective tape: with hot melt adhesive layer, it needs to be bonded by hot pressing or ironing, suitable for clothing printing.
- Sewn reflective tape: no adhesive layer, directly sewn on clothing by sewing machine.
- Elastic reflective tape: stretchable material, such as sportswear or yoga clothes.
- Flame retardant reflective tape: used in high-demand scenes such as fire suits and protective clothing.
- Heat transfer reflective film: reflective material suitable for pattern transfer, transferred to the surface of the fabric by high temperature.

Can reflective tape be ironed?
Not all reflective tapes are suitable for ironing, which depends on the thermal stability of the substrate and adhesive layer. The essence of ironing is to melt the hot melt adhesive layer through temperature and pressure and then adhere it to the fabric. Therefore, the following factors determine whether the reflective tape can be ironed:
- Heat resistance of the substrate: For example, the melting point of the PET substrate is around 250°C, and it can be used safely within 150°C. However, the PVC substrate has a low melting point and poor thermal stability, so it is not recommended to iron directly.
- Types of adhesive layer: Hot-stick tape uses hot melt adhesive, which can be bonded by setting an appropriate temperature; cold-stick pressure-sensitive adhesive is not suitable for ironing, otherwise it will damage the adhesive layer.
- Reflective layer structure: The glass bead reflective layer is heat-resistant, but if the temperature is too high, it is easy to cause the beads to melt or the surface to turn white.
YSM laboratory tests show that its hot-stick reflective tape is suitable for temperatures of 120~150°C, and can be firmly attached and maintain good reflective performance under appropriate pressure; while PVC reflective tape is only recommended for cold sticking or sewing.
Standard process for ironing reflective tape correctly
To iron reflective tape safely and efficiently, be sure to follow the standard process:
Step 1: Confirm the type of tape and applicable fabric
Confirm whether it is a hot-stick tape, and check whether the product parameters are marked with words such as "ironable" and "hot pressing".
Determine the fabric material. Conventional fabrics such as cotton, polyester, and polyester-cotton blends can be used. Nylon and PU fabrics require low temperature testing.
Step 2: Set equipment parameters
The recommended mid-range temperature for household irons is about 130-140°C
The temperature of the industrial heat press is set at 130-150°C, the pressure is about 0.3-0.5MPa (56kg pressure), and the time is controlled at 10-15 seconds
Step 3: Pre-treat the fabric
The fabric should be dry, oil-free and dust-free. If necessary, use a high-temperature cloth to pre-iron it to improve the adhesion of the glue layer.
Step 4: Ironing steps
Put the reflective tape on the fabric with the reflective side facing up and the hot melt adhesive side facing down
Cover it with a high-temperature cloth and perform heat pressing or even pressing and ironing
It is advisable to control the time for 10 to 15 seconds. Avoid sliding the iron during ironing and keep the pressure steady
Step 5: Cooling, peeling and effect inspection
Peel it off after cooling naturally to room temperature to observe whether the tape is firmly bonded, whether the edge is warped, and whether the surface is uniform
If some parts are not firmly bonded, a second local pressing can be performed

Common problems and solutions for ironing
Problem: Is the reflective layer foggy or white?
It may be that the temperature is too high or the ironing time is too long, causing the surface of the microbeads to break.
It is recommended to lower the temperature or reduce the pressing time, and use a high-temperature cloth as a buffer layer.
Problem: Edge warping?
It may be that the adhesive layer is not fully melted or the pressure is insufficient, resulting in weak adhesion.
The pressure can be increased or the ironing time can be extended to ensure that the adhesive layer is fully bonded.
Problem: Bubbles or wrinkles?
Often because the fabric is not fully dried or there is oil on the surface.
It is recommended to pre-treat the fabric and use steam-free dry ironing.
Problem: Falling off after washing?
Not meeting the heat pressing standard or peeling too early.
Be sure to peel after cooling. It is recommended to do a washing test to ensure washability (YSM products can be washed more than 50 times)
